Darrell Bazzell began his appointment as senior vice president and chief financial officer (CFO) at The University of Texas at Austin on April 18, 2016. Bringing more than 33 years of experience in finance, administration, and operations, he previously served for 13 years as the vice chancellor for finance and administration at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he was responsible for the overall supervision of the university's financial, administrative and auxiliary functions.
With a strong record of working collaboratively with the provost, deans, and across the UW-Madison campus, Bazzell stewarded Wisconsin’s flagship public university through several state budget-writing processes and efforts to promote high-quality campus services. He worked with leadership and the campus community to develop and implement new financial models, streamline business practices and leverage enterprise information technology tools.
Prior to his role as vice chancellor at UW-Madison, Bazzell developed a wide depth and breadth of knowledge and experience working in various leadership, budget and financial management roles. He was with the Department of Natural Resources from 1993 to 2003 and served as the agency’s secretary from 2001 to 2003. He served as deputy secretary of the department for five years and administrator of its Office of Planning and Analysis for close to three years.
During his 31 years of service to the State of Wisconsin, he also served as deputy administrator for the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection's Agricultural Resource Management Division and director of that agency's Plant Industry Bureau. He was also a policy and budget analyst for the departments of Administration and Health and Social Services.
Having earned a bachelor’s degree from UW-Madison, Bazzell became engaged early on with his community. He was named Big Brother of the Year for Wisconsin in 2014, and served as a former president of Boys and Girls Club of Dane County, the Urban League of Greater Madison, 100 Black Men of Madison, the Wisconsin Association of Black Public Sector Employees and the Gathering Waters Conservancy.
