Announcing the Director of Diversity and Talent Management
Dear FAS colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that Binta Brown has been appointed to Director of Diversity and Talent Management effective August 1. Binta joins us from her hybrid role with the university as a Dual Career and Recruitment Consultant, where part of her responsibilities included advising the campus on strategic diversity and inclusion initiatives such as designing and facilitating workshops on implicit bias in the workplace and hiring process. Before joining the university in 2016, Binta spent four years as Director of the Center for Career and Professional Development with Stephen F. Austin State University. She has more than a decade of experience in higher education developing and teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, serving as a Licensed Professional Counselor - Supervisor and certified online instructor. Binta is currently pursuing her doctoral degree in Leadership and Learning in Organizations at Vanderbilt University.
This new role reflects our holistic commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity. The collaborative work will build, strengthen, and implement strategies that embody our FAS mission and core values of diversity, innovation, integrity, service, stewardship, and teamwork. Binta’s leadership will also support our efforts in increasing workforce diversity by aiding in effectively recruiting, developing and retaining our workforce, and fostering an inclusive workplace where staff feel they belong and are comfortable bringing their whole selves to work, learn, grow and succeed. Much of the work will be realized through collaborative efforts with many others across campus and through initiatives such as the FAS Diversity Committee mentioned in my June 19 message.
"It is an honor to help strategically guide FAS' assessment and implementation efforts dedicated to diversity, inclusion, and equity," said Binta. "This work will include consultation with others in order to effectively build sustainable inclusion for everyone. Our efforts will be focused on the everyday experiences of our colleagues, and how our daily habits should support successful careers here. I look forward to working with talented colleagues across our portfolio and university to ensure diverse voices contribute to our meaningful work each and every day."
Creating, promoting, and sustaining an environment of inclusion will take each of us. It is difficult and important work that will take time and require ongoing engagement. Resources and more information will continue to be shared as more opportunities for participation, development, and implementation become available.
