Dear FAS Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that Xavier Rivera Marzán has been appointed as the Executive Director for Utilities & Energy Management (UEM) effective May 9, 2022.
As Executive Director, Xavier will manage all functions related to supporting the missions of the university, FAS, and UEM including long-range strategic planning for UEM which is an integral part of the university’s infrastructure. Xavier will take a leading role in all aspects of the UEM’s work which includes managing a team of more than 190 employees across five divisions: Electrical Distribution and Elevator Services, Energy Management and Optimization, Mechanical Distribution, Power Plant and Chilling Stations, and Support Services.
Xavier has a wealth of experience as a passionate leader of utilities and management organizations both in higher education and in the private sector. Most recently, Xavier served as Executive Director of Utilities and Energy Management at the University of Kentucky where he led a team of 120 utilities and energy management professionals. At the University of Kentucky, Xavier led the planning and implementation of the university’s strategic initiatives related to utilities and energy management including the development and implementation of a Utilities Master Plan and the design and construction of a new cogeneration, high pressure steam, thermal storage and chilled water plant to support a new medical district.
Xavier has a Masters in Leadership from Georgetown University, a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Florida Institute of Technology and a certification in Project Management from Georgetown University.
“I am pleased and excited to lead a globally recognized utilities and energy management department known for their cutting-edge approach to meeting the needs of the university and for setting standards in higher education and in the utilities industry as a whole,” said Xavier. “I look forward to being a part of the future growth of the university and continuing to support the university’s mission through exemplary service, planning and implementation.”
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Leonard Friesenhahn who stepped in as Interim Director and has been leading UEM during these past few months as we conducted our candidate search for the permanent Executive Director.
Please join me in welcoming Xavier to FAS and to the university in this critical leadership role in support of the university’s utilities and energy infrastructure and service delivery.
