Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Brian Smith serves as The University of Texas at Austin's Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, overseeing the university's $4 billion budget and providing strategic financial leadership to advance UT's academic, research, and healthcare missions.

Smith joins UT Austin from the University of Michigan where he served as Associate Vice President for Finance. In that role, he led operations in accounting and financial reporting, enterprise risk management, financial planning and analysis, insurance, payroll, procurement, real estate, sponsored programs, tax, and treasury. In 2021, he was Interim Executive Vice President for Business and Finance and Chief Financial Officer at Michigan, leading a comprehensive division responsible for facilities and operations, finance, human resources, investments and organizational culture and strategy.

Prior to his tenure at Michigan, Smith served as Senior Assistant Vice Chancellor and Treasurer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He managed the university's accounting, procurement, and treasury and risk management functions. Smith’s experience in financial leadership extends to the private sector, where he spent more than a decade in management positions at Wachovia Bank (now Wells Fargo).
